CSE Mentor Program student registration is open

The CSE Mentor Program matches current CSE students with industry professionals working in science, engineering, or actuarial fields. During these uncertain times, a mentor can be a valuable source of information on the changing job market, and how to best position yourself for the career you want. Mentors can also provide guidance on succeeding academically, balancing school, work, and life, and building lifelong skills like stress management. The CSE Mentor Program can set the groundwork for a lasting professional network and provide access to an insider's perspective on navigating your internship or job search, career path, and preparing for the transition from college life to the workplace.

The CSE Mentor Program is open to all CSE sophomores, juniors, and seniors. There is a specialized actuarial science option for interested students. First-year students are asked to wait a year to gain academic experience and perspective.

Register now!

Registration deadline is Friday, Sept. 25.

MURAJ Call for Student Journal Reviewers

MURAJ is seeking diverse and motivated students to be reviewers on our team in the 2020-2021 school year. Launched in 2016, MURAJ brings together students, the University Libraries, and the Office of Undergraduate Research to produce a peer-reviewed journal that celebrates undergraduate research on the Twin Cities campus.

As a reviewer, the students will be an essential part of a professional journal, receive training on how to provide constructive reviews, and engage with the broader UMN research community. Reviewers are expected to commit approximately 15 hours of work per semester, including attendance at hour-long biweekly meetings. Reviewing commitments are anticipated to be at their highest around January.

Interested students can apply here for reviewer positions by 11:59 pm CT on Friday, October 2nd. We will also hold an interest session for reviewing or publishing in MURAJ at 6:00 pm CT on Monday, September 14th through the Zoom meeting at z.umn.edu/InfoMURAJ.

If students want to submit research of their own this year, we invite them to join the submission interest mailing list here and watch for more news in early fall.

Internships in Social Work

This is a recently published internship guide titled, “Everything you need to know about social work internships”. This guide is designed to provide information about internships in the social work field. Social work, like other health and helping professions, requires an internship experience as part of the bachelor’s and master’s degree experiences. You can find a link to the guide here:

Social workers have decided to spend their careers helping others. And in that spirit, we thought we might be able to help them by creating this website and publishing resources to help them along their journey. Will you be able to share a link on your site so more students are able to benefit from this free resource?

Sustainability Scholarship

Ecolab has donated close to $2 million in scholarship funding for undergraduate students to be distributed in the following ways: 1) $750,000 in funding to Carlson students, and 2) 1.1 million in funding to all other undergraduate programs. Carlson will coordinate the scholarship selection process within our own college and Amy Hackett (cc’d) in the Office of Undergraduate Education (OUE) will coordinate the scholarship selection process for all other colleges. This will be a multi-year scholarship program in which current students receive up to $7,500 per academic year. As Ecolab Scholars, students will additionally be expected to participate in engagement activities related to sustainability. Together, Ecolab and the University of Minnesota hope to prepare future leaders who will put sustainability into practice.

The Carlson and OUE scholarship committees need experts in sustainability to serve as application reviewers and provide feedback on candidates. As faculty members with a significant interest in promoting sustainability on our campus, will you consider being a scholarship selection committee member for this program? Here are further specifics to note:

Timeline: The scholarship application will be available to students from March 5th to April 15th. Applications for your review will likely be available in mid to late May and our hope is to announce all scholarship decisions by mid June.

Application Review: In order to be considered for the Ecolab Scholars Program, students are asked to respond to the following prompts:

How did you discover your interest in sustainability and the environment? What about sustainability and the environment sparks your passion or moves you to action, and why? (300 words max.)

How will participating in engagement activities focusing on sustainability and the environment contribute to your educational goals? (300 words max.)

An ideal candidate for this program will have a demonstrated commitment to sustainability and the environment with a preference for students who have at least two-three years remaining at the University. Additionally, students must maintain adequate degree progress and meet financial need guidelines as determined by the University of Minnesota and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Rubric: We have created a standard rubric that will be used to assess each candidate in both the Carlson and OUE applicant pools. The main criteria that will be assessed is how well a student demonstrates a commitment to sustainability and the environment and their overall engagement with these topics.

Process: All eligible candidates will first be reviewed separately by the scholarship committees in Carlson and the OUE. For your role, you will be serving as a selection committee reviewer during the second stage of the review process, meaning you will not be reviewing every single application but rather the ‘top tier’ of the candidate pools (roughly 30 applicants). Each application will likely take between 5-10 minutes to review.
